My Experience with Ahrefs

I use Ahrefs daily across client projects, so this review is based on hands-on experience. Here's a quick look at where it shines, where it falls short, and the results it's delivered for me.

What Works Well

  • Backlink analysis depth: When I'm building link strategies for clients, Ahrefs consistently surfaces opportunities that other tools miss. The 35 trillion link index means I can find expired domains, broken link opportunities and competitor backlink profiles with far more granularity than alternatives.
  • Keyword research accuracy: The Keywords Explorer provides search volumes, keyword difficulty and traffic potential that align reasonably well with what I see in Google Search Console.   • Traffic estimates can be off: After comparing Ahrefs traffic estimates with actual Google Analytics data, I've found they can be significantly inaccurate for smaller sites. The estimates work better for comparative analysis (Site A vs Site B) than absolute traffic numbers.
  • Price increases: Ahrefs raised prices significantly in April 2024. The Lite plan jumped from $99 to $129/month and Enterprise went from $999 to $1,499. If you're budget-conscious, these increases are worth factoring into your decision.
  • No free trial: The lack of a free trial makes it harder to justify the investment upfront, especially for teams new to SEO tooling.

Keywords Explorer is Ahrefs' keyword research tool, covering 217 countries and 10 search engines including Google, YouTube, Amazon and Bing.

For any keyword, you'll see:

  • Keyword difficulty (KD): Estimated difficulty to rank in the top 10 (0-100)

The "Matching terms" and "Related terms" reports surface keyword opportunities I wouldn't find through basic research. The SERP history feature shows how rankings have shifted over time, which helps identify volatile niches.

Site Audit crawls your website to identify technical SEO issues, organised by severity:
